У раннедевонских двоякодышащих уже было высокоспециализированное строение черепа, типичное для всех представителей этой группы. Развитие зубных пластинок и изменение формы плавников происходили у них в течение девона быстро, а в линиях, ведущих к современным семействам, гораздо медленней. Свойственная современным африканским и южноамериканским двоякодышащим способность впадать в спячку во время засушливого сезона прослеживается на ископаемом материале до нижней перми.
